The South Western Railway (SWR) in Bengaluru recently recovered 512.25 sqm (641.25 sqm including extension sheds) of centrally-located railway land between Banaswadi and Hebbal after removing 24 unauthorised structures, mostly multi-storey. The operation was carried out under legal orders with support of the State Police and was linked to doubling of tracks on the Yesvantpur-Hosur section and Corridor-2 of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP). This step continues a broader push to reclaim railway land and improve infrastructure safety.
The Bengaluru Division of South Western Railway recently undertook an encroachment-removal drive between Banaswadi and Hebbal to clear land for railway expansion projects. The operation was connected with the doubling of tracks on the Yesvantpur-Hosur section and Corridor-2 of the BSRP.
As a result of the drive, 512.25 square metres of land was reclaimed, which, including extension sheds, comes to 641.25 square metres in prime city-centre railway property.
The unauthorised occupation comprised 24 structures most of them multi-storey buildings of up to three floors which had existed for many years.
The eviction was implemented in accordance with orders from the Estate Officer and the Court, with full legal process followed and with tight security from the State Police.
The operation was overseen by the Divisional Railway Manager of SWR, senior officials from Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (K-RIDE) and other divisional authorities. Officials described this move as an important step in protecting railway land from unauthorised occupation and enhancing safety for ongoing and future infrastructure projects in the city.
In the past, land encroachments on railway property in Bengaluru have been a recurring challenge. Efforts to reclaim land have often been tied to major infrastructure works such as suburban rail expansion and track doubling. This latest operation aligns with those precedent actions and underlines the railway's focus on asset protection and project readiness.
