Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has ordered a temporary halt to construction at the Prestige Towers project in Mahalaxmi after identifying violations of mandatory air pollution control norms. Inspections revealed inadequate dust mitigation measures, including insufficient barricading, lack of continuous water sprinkling and absence of required dust suppression systems. The civic body said these lapses could worsen air quality and pose health risks to nearby residents, commuters and on-site workers. The action is part of BMCs intensified monitoring of construction sites across Mumbai, especially during periods of high pollution. Work at the site will remain suspended until all prescribed air quality and environmental safeguards are fully implemented and verified.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has directed the suspension of construction activities at the Prestige Towers site in Mumbai?s Mahalaxmi area after finding multiple breaches of established air pollution mitigation standards. The stop-work order was issued by the civic authority following inspections that identified shortcomings in the implementation of dust and emission control measures required at construction and demolition locations.

According to officials, the builder failed to install prescribed protective measures aimed at limiting airborne pollution, including adequate site barricading, continuous water spraying to suppress dust during demolition and material handling, and the deployment of anti-smog or dust suppression equipment. These interventions form part of a comprehensive set of pollution mitigation protocols that construction firms in the city are expected to uphold, particularly during the winter months when air quality tends to deteriorate.

The municipal corporation?s action reflects an intensifying regulatory focus on pollution control across Mumbai?s urban development landscape, where seasonal spikes in particulate matter have prompted authorities to tighten enforcement at work sites. Civic engineers reported that the failure to implement basic safeguards at the Prestige Towers development posed a risk not only to workers on site but also to residents and commuters in surrounding neighbourhoods, who are vulnerable to elevated dust levels and associated health impacts.

In recent weeks, the BMC has stepped up monitoring at construction locations throughout the metropolis, issuing notices and stop-work directives to projects that do not meet the city?s 28-point air quality mitigation specifications. Ward-level teams have been tasked with regular inspections, and sites found to be non-compliant are being required to suspend operations until corrective measures are fully in place.
