The Ministry of Power is advancing the India Energy Stack to create a unified digital platform for the country's energy sector. The taskforce reviewed the draft strategy and architecture documents to guide the development of this infrastructure. Designed as a secure, interoperable system, IES will integrate renewable energy, electric vehicles, and consumer participation while overcoming challenges from fragmented digital systems. The platform will provide unique IDs, real-time data sharing, open APIs, and tools to enhance consumer empowerment, market access, and sector-wide innovation.
The Ministry of Power recently convened a taskforce meeting on the India Energy Stack (IES) to speed up the creation of an integrated digital public infrastructure for the energy sector. The taskforce aims to establish a unified, secure, and interoperable digital framework to streamline operations across India's energy ecosystem.
REC, the nodal agency responsible for IES, highlighted that the meeting focused on reviewing and discussing two core components: the draft IES Strategy Document (version 0.1) and the IES Architecture Document (version 0.1). As India moves toward a USD 5-trillion economy and advances its net-zero carbon emission targets, the power sector is experiencing both significant growth opportunities and emerging challenges.
The rapid expansion of renewable energy, electric vehicles, and increased consumer participation in energy markets is transforming the sector. However, fragmented systems and limited digital integration continue to pose barriers. To overcome these, the Ministry is building the India Energy Stack a Digital Public Infrastructure that provides a standardized, secure, and open platform to manage, monitor, and innovate across the electricity value chain.
The IES platform will introduce unique identifiers for consumers, assets, and transactions. It will support real-time, consent-based data sharing and offer open APIs to ensure seamless system integration. The infrastructure is also designed to empower consumers, facilitate market access, and encourage innovation across the sector.
