Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has started work on the detailed project report (DPR) for its Phase?III extension, linking Aluva to Angamaly through Kochi airport. The DPR, awarded to Systra MVA Consulting India at about INR?1.3?crore, is expected within six months. Preparatory work includes soil testing, topographic surveys, and temporary land marking. The 17.5 km corridor will feature both elevated and underground sections. Public feedback will be invited to align planning with community expectations. Earlier approvals and planning studies support technical and financial feasibility of the project.
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has officially initiated the detailed project report (DPR) process for Phase?III of its metro network, connecting Aluva to Angamaly via the Kochi airport. The Haryana-based firm, Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd, has been contracted for about INR?1.3?crore, with the DPR expected to be submitted within six months. The consultant has already begun temporary land marking, soil testing, and topographic surveys on government-owned land, which will be removed after completing the surveys.
The process to appoint the DPR consultant started in 2024, after the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs granted in-principle approval for central financial support. KMRL officials said the extension aims to address public demand for faster connectivity to the airport and northern suburbs. The DPR will finalize technical aspects including route alignment, exact corridor length, number of stations, and station locations.
Preliminary plans show the metro line starting at Aluva, following NH?544 to the Aleena Valavu area near Akaparambu, then via Kariyad-Airport-Mattoor Road to the airport. From there, it continues along Angamaly-Airport Road to MC Road at Angamaly and extends about 2?km further on NH?544 towards Thrissur. The corridor spans roughly 17.5?km, with most sections elevated and a small portion, around three kilometres, running underground.
KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera said public suggestions and ideas will be sought during the DPR exercise to ensure the development aligns with community expectations. This marks a significant step in expanding Kochi's metro network, improving connectivity, and providing an alternative transit option in the city's growing northern corridor.
Ground-level work has already started with temporary markings for soil tests and topographic surveys. The DPR will include detailed engineering studies, alignment options, station designs, and construction feasibility assessments. Previous studies had recommended an underground station at the airport, while elevated tracks will dominate the remaining route.
