Synopsis

Mizoram Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma met Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi this week to discuss pending and upcoming railway projects linked to the state's long-term connectivity plans. The CM requested the finalisation of the Sairang-Thenzawl rail line alignment in line with the Thenzawl Peace City master plan, and the minister indicated that the review would be completed by February 2026. The discussion also covered adjustments to train timings, reducing the Sairang-New Delhi travel time, increasing service frequency, linking the state's Inner Line Permit portal with IRCTC, and planning a warehouse near Sairang station.

The meeting between Mizoram Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw centred on improving railway accessibility for Mizoram. The CM highlighted that the alignment of the Sairang-Thenzawl railway line must be settled so the project can move forward as part of the Thenzawl Peace City master plan. Vaishnaw informed him that the alignment review is expected to be completed by February 2026. This project is considered important for extending the railway network deeper into the state and supporting planned urban and economic development.

The CM also raised concerns about the current train schedules on the Sairang-Guwahati and Sairang-Kolkata routes. He requested changes to ensure that incoming trains reach Sairang earlier in the day to make travel more convenient for passengers. The minister agreed to adjust the timings accordingly. On long-distance travel, the CM pointed out that the travel time between Sairang and New Delhi stands at around 42 hours and 20 minutes. He suggested that the duration be reduced and that the frequency of the service be increased from once a week to twice a week. Vaishnaw said the ministry would work towards cutting the travel time by about four hours and consider increasing the frequency.

Another request from the Mizoram government was the integration of the state's Inner Line Permit (ILP) portal with the IRCTC system. This link is intended to simplify the travel requirement process for visitors entering Mizoram. The minister assured that this proposal would be examined. In addition, Vaishnaw urged the state to identify land near Sairang station that could be used for a warehouse or cold storage facility to support regional logistics, especially for agricultural produce.

The expansion of railway connectivity has become increasingly important for Mizoram after the completion of the Bairabi-Sairang line, which connected the capital region to the national railway network for the first time. That project involved challenging terrain and major engineering structures, making it a significant milestone for the state. The proposed extension to Thenzawl aims to continue this progress and complement ongoing development efforts under the Peace City master plan.
