The Andhra Pradesh government has approved INR 27 crore for restoring four rain-water outfall canals connected to the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district. These canals OT1, OT2, OT4 and OT5 require desilting and improvements to handle storm-water flow from the airport site. The funds will be drawn from the HUDCO-supported INR 1,000 crore loan pool. The Water Resources Department will carry out the works. The government also requires the airport's master plan to include harvesting of at least 50% of on-site storm-water. The airport is scheduled for inauguration in August 2026.
The Andhra Pradesh government has given approval for INR 27 crore to restore four key rain-water outfall canals linked to the Bhogapuram International Airport project in Vizianagaram district. These canals, listed as OT1, OT2, OT4 and OT5, were identified by the Andhra Pradesh Airports Development Corporation Ltd. (APADCL) as needing immediate attention to prevent water stagnation around the airport site. The work mainly involves desilting the channels and strengthening their carrying capacity to support smooth discharge of storm-water from the airport area.
A Government Order issued by Special Chief Secretary M.T. Krishna Babu mentioned that the approval came after a detailed review of APADCL's proposal. The expenditure for the project will be met from the INR 1,000 crore loan sanctioned to the state by Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd. (HUDCO). As per the order, the Water Resources Department has been assigned the responsibility to execute the entire restoration work.
The order also highlights that the airport's master plan must incorporate a structured rain-water management system. It requires the airport to harvest at least 50% of the storm-water generated on the site for groundwater recharge or irrigation use. This condition has been put in place to ensure that the airport's long-term functioning does not strain local water systems and that the surrounding irrigation network remains undisturbed.
The outfall restoration is important because the lack of a proper discharge system could lead to flooding or overflow affecting nearby canals and farmlands during heavy rains. Ensuring that these channels operate effectively is necessary for both construction and future operations of the airport.
The Bhogapuram International Airport project has been progressing with phased development activities. Earlier, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had stated that the airport is planned for inauguration in August 2026, and various related works are being aligned with this timeline.
