Synopsis

Raigad district authorities have imposed a time-bound ban on heavy vehicles along the Mandwa Jetty-Alibag coastal road to reduce accidents and ease congestion. The restriction applies daily from 8 am-12 pm and 4 pm-8 pm, with exemptions for essential goods carriers and emergency vehicles. The narrow road, frequented by tourists and construction vehicles, has seen rising accidents. Weekend congestion and ferry traffic from Mumbai have worsened safety risks. Officials expect the move to improve road safety for students, local commuters, and tourists while easing traffic flow.

The Raigad district administration has introduced a permanent restriction on heavy vehicles along the Mandwa Jetty-Alibag road, a measure aimed at improving safety and managing traffic on this busy coastal route. District Collector Kishan Jawale issued the order, which bars heavy vehicles daily from 8?am to 12?pm and 4?pm to 8?pm, effective immediately and until further notice.

Essential goods carriers transporting milk, fuel, cooking gas, medicines, oxygen, vegetables, and water are allowed, along with police, fire brigade, and ambulance services. Collector Jawale explained that the decision considered the safety of school-going students and regular commuters who rely on the Mandwa route.

Officials highlighted that the narrow stretch experiences chronic congestion due to heavy tourist inflow to destinations such as Alibag, Mandwa, Kihim, Aksi, and Nagaon. The road is also used regularly by construction vehicles, including dumpers, cement mixers, and trucks carrying soil and gravel. Private vehicles from Ro-Ro ferries and passenger boats from Mumbai further increase traffic density, particularly during weekends.

Rising incidents of minor, major, and sometimes fatal accidents prompted the administration to intervene. Managing traffic has become critical not only for local residents but also for tourists visiting the coastal region. Long queues during peak hours have delayed commuters, students, and emergency vehicles alike.

The administration believes that restricting heavy vehicle movement during these hours will significantly reduce accident risks and ease traffic congestion. This step aligns with previous measures in the region where heavy-vehicle restrictions on narrow stretches were introduced to protect commuters and improve road safety. Authorities expect smoother movement along the Mandwa-Alibag corridor and safer conditions for everyone using the route.
