Synopsis

Indian Railways launched two new MEMU services connecting Delhi Junction-Shamli and Delhi Shahdara-Shamli to improve mobility for commuters, students, farmers, and professionals. The inauguration was led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and MoS Jayant Chaudhary at Baraut station. Shamli station is being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at a cost of INR 25 cr. Since 2014, Uttar Pradesh has added 5,272 km of rail tracks, fully electrified its lines, built over 1,460 flyovers/bridges, and installed lifts, escalators, and Wi-Fi across many stations.

Two new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services have started operating between Delhi and Shamli, boosting rail connectivity in the region. One train runs on the Delhi Junction-Shamli-Delhi Junction route, and the other on the Delhi Shahdara-Shamli-Delhi Shahdara route.

The services were inaugurated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister of State for Skill Development Jayant Chaudhary at Baraut railway station in Uttar Pradesh. The ministers emphasized that the new trains will significantly benefit daily commuters, students, farmers, and working professionals from the region.

Vaishnaw noted that the development aligns with broader efforts to modernize rail infrastructure. He said the Shamli station is being redeveloped as a 'modern, world-class facility' with an investment of INR 25 cr under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. In addition, he announced that the Delhi-Shamli railway section will be doubled, helping to improve capacity and speed.

Talking about Uttar Pradesh's rail progress, Vaishnaw shared that since 2014, the state has added 5,272 km of new tracks which he compared to the entire rail network of Switzerland. He added that all lines in the state are now electrified. Further, 1,460 flyovers and road under-bridges have been built since 2014 to ease connectivity. For passenger convenience, 154 lifts and 156 escalators have been installed at various railway stations, and Wi-Fi is now available at 771 stations across Uttar Pradesh.

Vaishnaw also highlighted that Uttar Pradesh currently operates 34 Vande Bharat Express services and 26 Amrit Bharat Express trains, indicating the scale of modern rail services in the state.

Railway officials added that the new MEMU services address a long-standing demand from the Shamli-Baghpat region, where better train connectivity was needed to support commuting and local economic activity.
