Lucknow Police has strengthened 'Operation Pehchaan' by holding landlords accountable if tenants involved in criminal activity are found to be living in their properties without proper verification. With the city seeing a surge in migrant inflow, authorities say some offenders have been renting homes using false identities. Tenant registration is now mandatory through the police website or the UPCOP app, to be completed before move-in or within a month. Police will verify details through physical checks, and landlords must keep copies of key documents. Rules for foreign nationals require Form C submission and prompt reporting. Regular reviews by ACPs, ADCPs and DCPs aim to ensure strict compliance.
Lucknow Police has expanded its 'Operation Pehchaan' initiative to place landlords directly in the crosshairs if their tenants engage in criminal activity. According to the authorities, landlords who fail to register or verify tenant details may now be held legally accountable - especially if a tenant later turns out to be involved in a crime.
The drive has been announced against the backdrop of a rising influx of migrants into the city, drawn by expanding opportunities in business, education, private employment, and government services.Police say that some individuals with criminal backgrounds have exploited this trend, taking up residences using false identities.
To streamline compliance, the police have made tenant registration mandatory on their official website and via the UPCOP mobile app, removing the need for physical visits to the station. Landlords must complete this registration either before the tenant moves in or within one month of their arrival.
After online submission, local police will carry out physical checks to corroborate the information. Landlords are required to retain copies of critical documents - the tenant's photograph, Aadhaar card, mobile number, and permanent address. When it comes to foreign nationals, the regulations are even more stringent: landlords must submit Form C to the local police and notify them promptly upon occupancy.
In a bid to foster accountability, the police have set up a framework of periodic reviews. Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) will review tenant registration progress weekly, Assistant Deputy Commissioners (ADCPs) will audit fortnightly, and Deputy Commissioners (DCPs) will oversee monthly evaluations.
