VA Tech WABAG has received a repeat design-build-operate order valued between USD 30 million and USD 75 million from Nepal's Melamchi Water Supply Development Board. The project involves setting up a 255-million-litre-per-day water treatment plant at Sundarijal in the Kathmandu Valley, funded by the Asian Development Bank. The work includes full EPC responsibilities along with five years of operations and maintenance. Construction is planned for 36 months. The new facility will stand beside WABAG's earlier Melamchi plant, strengthening its ongoing involvement in Nepal's drinking-water sector.
VA Tech WABAG has secured a large repeat order from Nepal's Melamchi Water Supply Development Board for a new water treatment plant in the Kathmandu Valley. The contract qualifies under the company's 'Large' order category, valued between USD 30 million and USD 75 million. The project will be funded by the Asian Development Bank and will add significant capacity to the region's water supply network.
The upcoming Sundarijal Water Treatment Plant will have a treatment capacity of 255 million litres per day. It is planned to be located next to WABAG's existing Melamchi plant, which was commissioned in 2017. For this new facility, the scope includes design, engineering, procurement, construction, installation, testing, and commissioning. Once the plant is completed, the company will also manage operations and maintenance for five years.
The construction and EPC phase is scheduled to run over 36 months. The plant will treat water from the Melamchi, Yangri, and Larke rivers, ensuring compliance with Nepal's National Drinking Water Quality Standards. This project is expected to support Kathmandu Valley's growing water demand and improve long-term supply reliability.
The company has clarified that the order is purely commercial, with no related-party involvement or promoter interest linked to the awarding authority. After the announcement, WABAG's shares recorded a gain of about 3 percent in the market.
This order adds to the company's earlier work in Nepal. Previously, WABAG won a USD 49 million ADB-funded contract for three wastewater treatment plants for Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited at Sallaghari, Kodku, and Dhobighat, with a combined capacity of 69 million litres per day. Those plants also included biogas generation and activated-sludge-based treatment systems.
Beyond Nepal, WABAG continues to work on international and domestic assignments, including a wastewater contract in Bahrain worth INR 121 crore and multiple industrial water projects across India.
