Synopsis

A detailed footpath inspection in Jayanagar by Bengaluru South City Corporation officials highlighted 22 different pedestrian obstructions across key stretches. The walk, conducted recently as part of the third round of Project Walkaluru, covered areas near the Jayanagar Shopping Complex, 11th Main Road-Aurobindo Marg, 10th Main Road, Marenahalli Main Road and lanes near Shalini Ground. Issues included garbage accumulation, broken footpath slabs, construction-material dumping, vehicle parking on pavements and commercial encroachments. With over 40 participants joining the inspection, officials directed immediate clearance at several locations and issued warnings to building owners.

A recent footpath inspection in Jayanagar under the third Walkaluru exercise recorded several issues affecting pedestrian movement. The two-hour walk was carried out by officials of the Bengaluru South City Corporation, along with residents, civic staff and volunteers from pedestrian-rights groups. The route began near the Jayanagar Shopping Complex and moved through 11th Main Road-Aurobindo Marg, 10th Main Road, Marenahalli Main Road and internal roads surrounding Shalini Ground in Jayanagar's 4th and 5th Blocks.

During the audit, officials documented 22 obstructions. These included three garbage-dumping spots, five damaged or broken footpath slabs, two stretches where parked vehicles blocked pedestrian access, ten locations where construction material had been dumped on pavements and two commercial properties that had extended their activity space onto the footpath. The findings reinforced earlier observations made in previous Walkaluru inspections, which have repeatedly shown how regular dumping and pavement encroachments hinder safe walking conditions.

Commissioner Ramesh K.N., who participated in the inspection, directed immediate removal of construction debris at ten identified sites across the stretch. He also instructed officials to ensure follow-up visits so that cleared spaces remain unobstructed. Building owners were warned to store construction materials within their properties and avoid placing them on public walkways, a recurring issue noted in earlier audits as well.

More than 40 participants took part in the walk, offering inputs on maintenance issues such as uneven surfaces and blocked access points. The observations gathered during the inspection will form part of the broader Walkaluru action plan, which aims to identify and resolve footpath barriers across Bengaluru through repeated field assessments and on-ground coordination with local teams.
