Kerala has asked Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) to transfer five acres of land at its Coconut Research Station in Balaramapuram to Kerala State Industrial Enterprises (KSIE) for a logistics hub meant to support Vizhinjam Port. The land lies about 5.4 km from the port gate and is suitable for container truck access. KSIE's plan includes more than 50,000 sq ft of warehousing, a container freight station, internal roads, offices and value-added logistics facilities. Earlier this year, KSIE had requested 15 acres, and government departments have begun reviewing the proposal.
The Kerala government has initiated the process for transferring five acres of land from Kerala Agricultural University's Coconut Research Station at Balaramapuram to Kerala State Industrial Enterprises for a logistics hub linked to Vizhinjam Port. The identified parcel is located at Kattachalkuzhi along the Balaramapuram-Vizhinjam Road and is roughly 5.4 km from the Vizhinjam Port gate, making it suitable for movement of full-size container trucks.
A communication issued by the agriculture (farms) department during the past week instructed KAU to provide its formal remarks on the logistics hub proposal included in KSIE's 2025-26 plan. The project report outlines a logistics facility with more than 50,000 sq ft of warehouse space, a container freight station, value-added logistics services, an administrative block, internal road connections and specialised storage units. KSIE has also included provisions for cold storage depending on operational needs.
KSIE had earlier approached KAU with a request for 15 acres to accommodate the full layout of the logistics hub. University officials have indicated that once the government issues the final notification, revenue procedures for taking possession of the five-acre area will begin. If the processes move without delay, this will become the first container freight station in the district, intended to support handling, storage and distribution operations for cargo moving through Vizhinjam Port.
In recent years, the development of Vizhinjam Port has increased the demand for nearby logistics infrastructure. The proposed KSIE facility is expected to support the wider supply chain by creating space for consolidation, de-consolidation and multi-user warehousing close to the port. The site's direct road access and proximity to the port gate were key factors behind the selection.
