Synopsis

NTPC has outlined a broad nuclear expansion plan involving 700 MW, 1,000 MW and 1,600 MW projects across multiple states. The company aims to contribute 30 GW to India's proposed 100 GW nuclear target by 2047 and is assessing land in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. NTPC has begun groundwork on technology partnerships, raw material sourcing and overseas uranium asset evaluation, supported by a draft agreement with UCIL. It is also setting up a large nuclear project in Rajasthan through ASHVINI, its joint venture with NPCIL.

NTPC has begun working on a detailed plan to add nuclear power projects of 700 MW, 1,000 MW and 1,600 MW capacities across different parts of the country, according to a senior official involved in the company's long-term strategy. The company is targeting a 30 per cent share, or 30 GW, of India's proposed 100 GW nuclear capacity planned for 2047.

Industry assessments show that a 1 GW nuclear station typically requires an investment ranging between INR 15,000 crore and INR 20,000 crore and usually takes a minimum of three years from concept to commissioning. NTPC is currently examining land options in several states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, along with a few other locations.

The official explained that the planned reactors fall in the 700 MW, 1,000 MW and 1,600 MW categories, and the company will move forward only in states that receive site approval from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB). The official added that once the AERB finalises locations, NTPC will initiate implementation accordingly.

Alongside location evaluations, NTPC has begun work on securing future fuel supply. The company is exploring international uranium assets and has already signed a draft agreement with Uranium Corporation of India Ltd for joint techno-commercial due diligence of such assets. Uranium, being the primary fuel for nuclear reactors, remains a critical component of NTPC's long-term nuclear plans.

In terms of technology, NTPC is preparing to use indigenously developed pressurised heavy-water reactors (PHWRs) for the 700 MW and 1,000 MW units. For the larger 1,600 MW plants, the company is considering technological collaborations with global partners to support design and development.

NTPC, established in 1975 as a thermal power producer, has gradually diversified into multiple energy segments, including hydro, solar and now nuclear. As per its latest publicly available data, the company has an installed group-level capacity of 84,848 MW across coal, gas/liquid fuel, hydro and solar assets.

The company is also advancing its first major nuclear project through ASHVINI, its joint venture with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. NTPC holds a 49 per cent stake in ASHVINI, while NPCIL owns 51 per cent. The JV is setting up the 4x700 MW Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project in Rajasthan with an investment of about INR 42,000 crore. The project's foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister a few weeks ago.
