The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala is moving towards becoming a key transshipment hub for India, with officials noting that it is gradually positioning itself to handle cargo that currently moves through ports such as Singapore, Colombo, Salalah and Dubai. The port's location near major international shipping routes and its strong road, rail and air connectivity give it a significant operational advantage. Officials noted that once the port attains full capacity, it is expected to offer notable savings in ship and navigation costs for Indian cargo. The project aims to strengthen India's presence in global maritime trade.
The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram is progressing towards becoming a major transshipment hub for the country. According to an official from Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt Ltd (AVPPL), the project is designed to bring Indian cargo transshipment currently handled at ports like Singapore, Colombo, Salalah and Dubai to domestic shores.
The official explained that once the port operates at full capacity, it is expected to generate considerable savings in ship and navigation expenses, creating a consumer surplus for the Indian shipping ecosystem. The advantages of the port's location were highlighted, particularly its closeness to international shipping routes linking Europe, the Persian Gulf and the Far East through the east-west shipping axis, which lies within 10 nautical miles.
Connectivity has also been cited as a strong factor behind the port's potential. The site is linked to National Highway 47, which is 2 km away and connects Salem and Kanyakumari. The national rail network lies at a distance of 12 km, offering direct access to other key regions, while the Trivandrum International Airport is 15 km from the port, supporting efficient multimodal transport.
Industry observers have noted in previous discussions that the port's natural depth and minimal dredging requirements have been key factors behind its development. The project has been positioned for several years as a strategic asset to reduce India's dependence on foreign ports for container transshipment, and the present progress reinforces this long-term vision.
