The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 2 of the Jaipur Metro has received approval from the Public Investment Board (PIB), moving the metro expansion closer to final clearance and construction. Earlier, the Rajasthan government approved and forwarded the DPR to the Union government after announcing the project in the state budget. Phase 2 will span about 42.80 km with 36 stations and an estimated cost of around INR 12,260 crore, and is planned to connect major residential, industrial, and commercial hubs across Jaipur.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase 2 of the Jaipur Metro Rail Project has recently been approved by the Public Investment Board (PIB), which is chaired by the secretary of the department of expenditure in the Union ministry of finance. This approval is a key procedural step in the project’s approval process. After this mark of progress, a detailed cabinet note will be prepared and sent first to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Union Ministry of Finance for consideration. Only after clearances at those levels, and a subsequent review by the Prime Minister’s Office, will the proposal be placed before the Union Cabinet for the final decision.
This metro expansion plan was earlier approved by the Rajasthan Chief Minister, who cleared and forwarded the DPR to the Union government for approval following its announcement in the state budget for 2025-26. The project covers a stretch of about 42.80 km from Todi Mode to Prahladpura with provision for about 36 stations, of which two will be underground and the rest elevated. The Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation, a 50:50 joint venture between the state and central governments, will implement the Phase 2 corridor.
Phase 2 is estimated to cost around INR 12,260 crore, with financial institutions expected to provide loans to support its execution. This corridor aims to link significant parts of Jaipur, including residential, educational, commercial, and industrial zones such as the VKI Industrial Area and the Sitapura Industrial Area, improving city wide connectivity and accessibility.
Once the central approvals are completed, construction will begin, marking the next major stage in expanding Jaipur’s metro network. The project’s planning stages have involved detailed assessments to align infrastructure development with projected urban growth and commuter needs. Upon completion, the expanded metro line is expected to relieve traffic congestion and offer a reliable mass transit option for Jaipur’s growing population.
Phase 2 builds on the existing East-West corridor of Jaipur Metro and complements long term urban transportation plans by providing broader coverage across the city. Previous versions of the project’s planning had explored cost effective alignments and elevated tracks to manage overall expenses, reflecting ongoing efforts to balance financial and functional aspects of metropolitan transit development.
