In Vadodara, the planned draw for 2,700 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana was postponed by a day, prompting beneficiaries to protest at the Sir Sayajirao Nagargruh town hall. Although the Vadodara Municipal Corporation said it sent multiple messages about the postponement, many applicants claimed they did not receive or see these alerts. Some had taken leave from work and were worried about losing wages if they had to return for the rescheduled draw. The protests highlight ongoing concerns about communication and delays in housing allotments.
In Vadodara, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) raised strong objections at the Sir Sayajirao Nagargruh town hall after the scheduled draw for 2,700 houses was postponed by a day earlier this week. Many applicants had reached the venue expecting the draw, having planned their travel and in some cases taken leave from work, and were surprised when officials announced the change.
The civic body responsible for the draw, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), said it had sent two messages to each applicant alerting them about the postponement due to unavoidable reasons. Despite this, a number of people said they did not receive the messages or missed seeing them on time, leading to frustration and concerns about losing wages if they had to return again for the new date.
Several beneficiaries voiced their disappointment during the protest, pointing out that many have waited a long time for housing under government schemes. The incident reflects ongoing frustration among applicants who feel communication around important housing updates remains weak. In recent weeks, the housing challenges in Vadodara have been highlighted by other issues, including a cheating case in which a man was booked for allegedly taking more than INR 1.78 lakh from people by falsely promising PMAY houses.
Officials maintained that communications were sent well in advance, but the protest suggests a gap between official notices and beneficiary awareness. Authorities are now preparing to conduct the delayed draw soon, and civic leaders have said they aim to minimise any further inconvenience. Local residents continue to watch for clarity on the process, given the importance of housing support through PMAY and past concerns about housing delivery in the city.
