Synopsis

A century-old three storey building in Kolkata’s Bowbazar partially collapsed earlier this week, injuring one person. Kolkata Metro Railway inspected the site and clarified that it is not responsible for fresh damage, noting that tunnelling work was already completed and no active construction is underway. Temporary supports were installed, and Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been asked to assess the building. Residents had reported train vibrations days before the collapse. Bowbazar has experienced recurring structural issues since 2019, highlighting the need for proper maintenance and monitoring of ageing urban buildings.

In Kolkata’s Bowbazar area, a threestorey building at 107 BB Ganguly Street partially collapsed earlier this week, leaving one resident injured. Engineers from Kolkata Metro Railway inspected the site and stated that the Metro is not liable for any new damage. They confirmed that underground tunnelling in the area has already been completed, no heavy construction work is ongoing, and the building had been showing signs of deterioration even before Metro operations began.

Temporary supports have been installed to safeguard the remaining residents. Kolkata Metro has requested Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to inspect the century-old structure and take necessary action to ensure safety. The building is located above the Sealdah–Esplanade section of the Green Line, which was recently commissioned following tunnelling and system testing.

Local residents said they had noticed vibrations from passing Metro trains about ten days before the collapse and had informed Metro authorities. Bowbazar has a history of structural concerns. Since 2019, several buildings in the area, including Durga Pituri Lane and Madan Dutta Lane, developed cracks during Metro construction. Previous incidents led to long-term evacuations, with many families returning only eight months ago.

Metro officials emphasised that damage caused by resident neglect, lack of maintenance, or the natural aging of buildings does not fall under Metro’s responsibility. They reiterated that all tunnelling and construction work in the area has been completed safely and that the recent collapse is unrelated to ongoing Metro operations.
