Synopsis

The Union government has sanctioned INR 44,771 crore for Odisha’s road infrastructure this financial year, focusing on national and state highway improvements and a proposed greenfield corridor. National highway upgrades cover Bhubaneswar–Puri, Tangi–Puintola–Ichchapuram, Rourkela–Barbil–Paradip, and NH149 sections. State highway projects include Barpali–Bolangir, Kesinga–Junagarh, Bolangir–Nayagarh, Hinjilikatu bypass, Berhampur–Kalusandhpur, and Parlakhemundi–Mohana roads. The planned Bhubaneswar–Paradip corridor will improve port connectivity, support industrial logistics, and boost economic growth across Odisha.

The Union government has approved road projects worth INR 44,771 crore for Odisha, aiming to strengthen the state’s transport network and improve connectivity to industrial hubs, ports, and regional towns. The Works Minister of Odisha, Prithiviraj Harichandan, confirmed that this investment will cover upgrades to both national and state highways under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) for the current financial year.

The national highway projects include five major stretches. These involve widening the Bhubaneswar–Puri road, upgrading the 140km Tangi–Puintola–Ichchapuram stretch, improving the 400km Rourkela–Barbil–Paradip corridor via Duburi, and enhancing the 68km NH149 section between Pallahada and Pitiri. These upgrades are expected to reduce travel time, improve safety, and facilitate smoother movement of goods and passengers across the state.

For state highways, INR 13,141 crore has been allocated for key projects. Work will include four laning the Barpali–Bolangir road, upgrading the Kesinga–Bhawanipatna–Junagarh route, improving Bolangir–Nayagarh, constructing a bypass at Hinjilikatu, widening the Berhampur–Kalusandhpur road, and enhancing the Parlakhemundi–Mohana stretch. These improvements are expected to connect remote areas with major towns and support regional economic growth.

A greenfield corridor connecting Bhubaneswar and Paradip has also been proposed to enhance access to the port city and strengthen industrial logistics. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has requested a detailed project report (DPR) for this corridor. The combined efforts of highway expansion and new routes reflect a strategic move to improve transport infrastructure, reduce congestion, and support Odisha’s growing trade and industrial activity.
