Synopsis

South Korea is moving forward with plans for a 4.5 trillion won (USD 3.06 billion) semiconductor foundry to support local chip production and innovation. The facility, backed by government and private investment, will allow fabless companies to develop and test AI chips while boosting domestic defence semiconductor manufacturing. A special committee under President Lee Jae Myung will oversee policies and investments to ensure South Korea retains its global semiconductor leadership. The initiative strengthens memory chip production, supports emerging chip designers, and reduces reliance on imported components in strategic sectors.

South Korea is planning a 4.5 trillion won (USD 3.06 billion) semiconductor foundry, supported by both government and private investment, to strengthen its local chip industry. The initiative aims to help the country maintain its position as a global leader in semiconductors, especially in memory chips and advanced chip design.

President Lee Jae Myung recently met with executives from major companies, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, along with policymakers and industry experts, to discuss strategies for expanding the country's semiconductor ecosystem. The government is considering building a 12-inch, 40-nanometre foundry to support fabless companies in designing and testing new chips, particularly for artificial intelligence applications.

The ministry emphasized that South Korea will also focus on producing defence-related semiconductors domestically, as almost all of these components are currently imported. To support this, the government may introduce provisions giving priority to locally made semiconductors in national security infrastructure projects.

A special semiconductor committee will be established under President Lee to coordinate national policies, oversee investment, and ensure that South Korea remains competitive in both commercial and strategic chip sectors. This plan builds on the country's past success in memory chip production and the ongoing effort to expand the domestic foundry and fabless ecosystem.
