Synopsis

The Maharashtra government has signed three MoUs to develop pumped-storage hydropower projects worth INR 23,800 crore across Pune, Raigad, Satara and Ahilyanagar districts. Partnering with JSW Neo Energy, Mahagenco Renewable Energy and New Asian Infrastructure Development, the state plans to create 5,800 MW of capacity and around 11,500 jobs. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Maharashtra is positioning itself as India's leading hub for pumped-storage systems, supported by the natural elevation of the Western Ghats and existing dam infrastructure. The projects including the Western Ghats, Koyna Stage-6 and Sarovar pumped-storage facilities are expected to enhance grid stability by balancing renewable-energy fluctuations.

The Maharashtra government's water resources department formalised three memorandums of understanding earlier this week for developing pumped-storage hydropower projects across multiple districts. The agreements, involving a combined investment commitment of INR 23,800 crore, were signed with JSW Neo Energy Ltd, Mahagenco Renewable Energy Ltd and New Asian Infrastructure Development Pvt Ltd. According to the state government, the projects are projected to generate 5,800 MW of electricity and create nearly 11,500 jobs.

Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, who attended the signing ceremony, said Maharashtra aims to establish itself as the country's primary hub for pumped-storage capacity. He noted that the state has already achieved a development potential of 76,115 MW through previously signed agreements. Fadnavis added that the natural elevation of the Western Ghats and the presence of large dams provide Maharashtra with an advantage in expanding its pumped-storage network.

The new MoUs cover the Western Ghats Pumped Storage Project in Pune and Raigad districts, the Koyna Stage-6 Pumped Storage Project in Satara district, and the Sarovar Pumped Storage Project in Ahilyanagar district. Officials stated that these facilities will support grid stability by balancing fluctuations in renewable-energy generation. They also said that central government support is helping accelerate approvals and project development across the sector.
