The government informed Parliament that rooftop solar systems have been installed in 23.96 lakh households under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, amounting to nearly 24% of the one-crore target set for FY2026-27. More than 53 lakh applications have been submitted so far, with over 7,075 MW of capacity installed across the residential sector nationwide.
The government told Parliament earlier this week that rooftop solar systems have been installed in 23.96 lakh households across the country under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, representing around 23.96% of the targeted one crore households to be covered by FY2026-27. The update was provided by the Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
He noted that the scheme operates on a demand-driven model, allowing any residential consumer with a grid-connected electricity connection from their local distribution company to apply through the National Portal. As of the first week of December 2025, the portal had received 53,54,099 applications, while 19,17,698 rooftop solar systems had been installed, covering 23,96,497 households.
The minister added that the target of one crore households remains set for completion by FY2026-27, including the current and upcoming financial years. He also referenced an earlier reply stating that the scheme carries an overall outlay of INR 75,021 crore, with no state-wise allocation as the programme continues to operate based on consumer demand.
As of early December 2025, rooftop solar capacity in the residential sector stood at 7,075.78 MW. To ensure the reliability and performance of installations under the scheme, the Ministry has prescribed minimum technical standards for modules, inverters and balance-of-system components. Local DISCOM officials inspect installations, and vendors are required to maintain the systems for five years from the commissioning date.
The minister further stated that a third-party assessment covering at least 1% of installations on a nationwide basis is under way. He also outlined the central financial assistance available to households: INR 30,000 per kWp for the first 2 kWp and INR 18,000 per kWp for the additional 1 kWp, with subsidies capped at 3 kWp. For group housing societies and residential associations, the assistance stands at INR 18,000 per kWp up to 500 kWp, with special-category states receiving 10% higher support.
