The Forest Department has cleared Package 2 of the Mysuru-Kushalnagar National Highway project, allowing work to begin on the 22.7-km stretch between Guddehosur and the Hassan-Periyapatna Road Junction. This segment is part of the 92.3-km highway that aims to reduce travel time between Mysuru and Kushalnagar to under 1.5 hours. Over 85% of the required land is already available, including compensation for 8.3 km of forest land. While Package 1 remains on hold due to environmental concerns, the updated project timeline indicates expected completion by June 2027.
The Forest Department has granted its approval for Package 2 of the 92.3-km Mysuru-Kushalnagar National Highway project, clearing an important requirement for work to begin on the 22.7-km section between Guddehosur in Kushalnagar and the Hassan-Periyapatna Road Junction. This approval had been pending for a long time and was one of the main reasons the segment could not move into the construction stage despite earlier tendering activity.
The overall project was originally launched when the foundation stone was laid in early 2023. It aims to provide a smoother route between Mysuru and Kodagu, eventually allowing Bengaluru-bound traffic to bypass Mysuru city. Officials have said the full highway will reduce travel time between Mysuru and Kushalnagar to under 1.5 hours, creating a more direct link to Kodagu and parts of Dakshina Kannada.
Project authorities confirmed that more than 85% of land required for Package 2 has already been secured. This package includes 8.3 km of forest land, for which compensatory land has been handed over to the forest department as required. The delays in approval earlier had held up progress even though tenders for the highway were floated in February 2023.
Package 2 is expected to be the first major section to move into execution, while some uncertainty remains around Package 1, which covers the Kushalnagar-Madikeri stretch. That part continues to face environmental concerns, and construction can begin only after new assessments and approvals.
Initial plans had targeted 2026 for completion. However, updated projections from authorities now indicate that the highway is expected to be ready for public use by June 2027, depending on the speed of work on all remaining portions and the pace at which pending clearances are resolved.
