AMC recently sealed eleven PG tenements in Thaltej after finding them operating without necessary permissions. The crackdown is part of a larger city-wide drive that identified 401 PG units, of which 385 lacked mandatory society or police clearances. Notices were issued, particularly targeting large and multi-flat PG operations rather than individual-house setups. The action follows legal directives and a meeting of city officials and lawmakers demanding enforcement. PG operators have been warned: secure the required approvals or face closure of their properties.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has shut down eleven tenements in the Thaltej neighbourhood after determining that they were operating paying-guest (PG) accommodations without the necessary permissions. The properties located in Soham Row Houses were sealed three on the first day of action and eight the next after the operators failed to respond to prior notices.
This action is part of a wider enforcement campaign. AMC surveyors recently identified a total of 401 PG units across the city. Of these, 385 were found running without proper NOCs (No Objection Certificates) from both the housing societies and police authorities, and those operators were officially warned to regularise operations or face closure.
Authorities explained that their focus has primarily been on larger or 'professional' PG setups such as those operating out of big bungalows or multiple flats rather than small PGs run from a single house in a society.
The crackdown gained momentum following calls for action during a coordination-committee meeting involving MPs and MLAs, which was chaired by the municipal commissioner. A member of Parliament from the ruling party asked for strict legal measures against illegal PG operators.
Under the revised rules introduced earlier this year, all PG operators in the city must obtain a society NOC, complete police verification for residents, and meet requirements such as fire-safety clearance and adequate parking space. Non-compliance could lead to sealing of the units.
In the coming days, AMC has indicated that sealing actions may be extended to more unauthorised PG units including those operating inside residential societies if they do not secure the required permissions.
