Synopsis

Work has begun on a 4.26 km, four-lane road over the Rajiv Nagar-Kurji drain in Patna, aimed at easing traffic for over 2 lakh residents. The project includes converting the open drain into a covered box drain and constructing a wide road with footpaths, street lighting, and drainage infrastructure. Contracted at INR 149.5?crore, it will connect key localities including Rajiv Nagar, Mahesh Nagar, Indrapuri, and Patel Nagar, addressing congestion, waterlogging, and sanitation challenges. Completion is expected within two years.

Construction has started on a four-lane road over the Rajiv Nagar-Kurji drain in Patna, connecting Ashiana-Digha Road to Atal Path. The 4.26?km-long project is expected to directly benefit over 2 lakh residents living in areas such as Rajiv Nagar, Mahesh Nagar, Indrapuri, and Patel Nagar, where daily traffic congestion has been a recurring issue.

The project involves converting the open drain into a covered box drain using central load-bearing technology. On top of this, a 24-metre-wide, four-lane road will be constructed. In addition, the plan includes footpaths, LED street lighting, trash racks, precast manholes for maintenance, and other drainage infrastructure. Previously, a single-lane road ran alongside the open drain, causing frequent traffic jams and limited connectivity for residents trying to reach Ashiana-Digha Road or Atal Path.

The contract for the project was awarded at INR 149.5?crore, which is lower than the initial estimate of INR 180.9?crore. The Chief Minister had laid the foundation stone in August earlier this year, and the project is expected to be completed within two years. Once finished, the road will provide smoother traffic flow, improve connectivity, and address waterlogging and sanitation challenges by covering the open drain.

The project is part of a broader urban infrastructure development plan in Patna. Similar initiatives are being considered over other drains, including the Anandpuri drain, aiming to modernize the city's drainage and road network simultaneously. The integrated design seeks to reduce congestion, enhance pedestrian safety, and improve overall urban hygiene while accommodating future traffic growth in these densely populated areas.
