Dum Dum Cantonment Metro station has become an important interchange point after Eastern Railway introduced a new suburban service to Bangaon and extended the Hasnabad-Barasat local to this station. These changes, which took effect during the past week, now allow Metro passengers to shift directly to suburban trains without travelling to Sealdah. The updated timetable includes an evening Bangaon local at 8:05 pm and an extended EMU arriving at 7:51 pm. The interchange is expected to reduce crowding, shorten travel time, and support smoother peak-hour travel.
The Dum Dum Cantonment Metro station on Kolkata's Yellow Line has started functioning as a key interchange point after Eastern Railway added and extended suburban services connecting Bangaon and Barasat. The new arrangements, introduced during the past week, are expected to make travel more convenient for passengers who frequently switch between the Metro network and suburban routes.
The Metro's accessibility improved earlier this year when the Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar stretch was inaugurated, creating a direct link to the airport. This development had already increased footfall at stations along the route. With the latest additions, Dum Dum Cantonment now serves as another entry point into Kolkata for commuters arriving from suburban areas.
Passengers using the station can now board suburban trains that either originate from or pass through the adjacent Eastern Railway station. Officials stated that the new setup helps reduce dependency on Sealdah, where Bangaon-bound trains usually experience heavy crowding, especially during peak hours.
At present, a Bangaon local departs Dum Dum Cantonment at 6:37 pm. A second EMU service, introduced recently, leaves at 8:05 pm, offering an additional option for evening travellers. Railway officials said this service will particularly benefit commuters who prefer to avoid the longer trip and larger crowds at Sealdah.
In addition to the Bangaon service, the Hasnabad-Barasat EMU has been extended to Dum Dum Cantonment. The extended train reaches the station at 7:51 pm, giving passengers another direct suburban connection. These updates are aimed at offering more flexibility and easing congestion along the existing suburban routes.
The combined effect of the new and extended services is expected to improve the movement of daily commuters, especially those travelling between northern suburbs and the central parts of Kolkata. The interchange arrangement is also likely to help distribute travel load more evenly across the network.
