The Bhopal Metro is set to begin operations on December 13, starting with the Subhash Nagar to AIIMS corridor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the service, followed by a week of free rides for residents. The metro has received all required regulatory approvals, and fares will start from INR?10 after the free period. Trains will run from 8?AM to 8?PM, initially with two three-coach trains. The design emphasizes accessibility, including braille-enabled coaches and seating for differently-abled passengers, providing a safe, fast, and modern commuting option.
The Bhopal Metro is scheduled to start passenger operations on December 13, following the flagging off of the service by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first corridor, connecting Subhash Nagar to AIIMS Bhopal, has received all necessary approvals, including the clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS). Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRCL) officials confirmed that the first week of rides will be free, allowing residents to experience the service without any cost and get accustomed to the new transport system.
The metro project in Bhopal faced delays earlier this year due to the requirement of constructing an additional overbridge and adding three more stations to the original plan. Once these were completed, the project became ready for commercial operations. The metro is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and provide a modern, safer, and faster commuting option for the city?s residents.
After the free-ride period, ticket prices will start from INR?10 for short distances and go up to INR?20 for journeys of around eight kilometres. Initially, trains will operate from 8:00?AM to 8:00?PM at intervals of 30 minutes. Out of the total fleet of 10 three-coach trains, each capable of carrying approximately 750 passengers, two trains will begin operations. The trains are designed to run at an average speed of 30?km/h, ensuring timely and efficient travel.
Accessibility features have been prioritized in the design of the metro coaches. They are equipped with braille-friendly controls and dedicated seating for differently-abled passengers, reflecting a focus on inclusive urban mobility. Officials also noted that the metro will complement the city?s public transport network, reduce travel time, and offer an environmentally friendly alternative to road transport.
