Synopsis

Punjab has announced an INR 16,209 crore initiative to construct 44,920 km of roads across the state. Covering PWD roads, rural link roads, mandi-board stretches, and urban roads, the project is fully funded by the state after central rural development funds were withheld. The plan includes a five year maintenance clause, with strict quality checks and approval from local bodies before payment release. Aiming to improve rural and urban connectivity, the project also addresses infrastructure damaged by last year's floods, supporting trade, mobility, and access to essential services.

The Punjab government, under Chief Minister Shri Bhagwant Mann, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to construct 44,920 kilometres of roads across the state, with an estimated investment of INR 16,209 crore. The initiative will cover 2,829 km of roads managed by the Public Works Department (PWD), 18,545 km of rural link roads, 22,291 km under the Punjab Mandi Board, and 1,255 km of urban roads managed by civic authorities.

The project is fully funded by the state government after central funds under rural development schemes were not released. The government has planned the roads to be completed by the end of next year, with a strict five-year maintenance clause to ensure long-term durability. Contractors will be responsible for upkeep, and payments will be released only after local bodies confirm the quality of work.

Mann stated that the government conducted extensive surveys to identify stretches needing construction, repair, or widening. Villages will be required to approve the material quality and workmanship before any payments are made to contractors. The plan focuses on both rural and urban connectivity, aiming to provide smoother travel for villagers, farmers, and city residents.

The initiative also addresses infrastructure losses caused by last year's floods, which disrupted mobility in several regions. The new roads are expected to enhance access to markets, improve trade routes, and strengthen overall connectivity in the state. Additionally, urban stretches will focus on reducing traffic congestion and improving road safety. The government has emphasized close monitoring of construction work to avoid delays and ensure compliance with quality standards.
