Synopsis

The Union Cabinet has approved an INR 9,858 crore Phase 2 expansion of Pune Metro, adding Lines 4 and 4A, covering roughly 31.6 km with 28 elevated stations. These lines will connect key IT, commercial, educational, and residential areas across Pune. Maha?Metro will handle all construction and systems work, with preliminary surveys and design activities already underway. Daily ridership on these corridors is expected to reach 4.09 lakh by 2028 and over 11.7 lakh by 2058. The expansion aims to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and support long-term urban growth.

The Union Cabinet has approved an expansion of the Pune Metro network at a cost of INR 9,858?crore, marking a significant step in the city's urban transport development. The approval covers Phase 2, which will introduce two new corridors: Line 4 running through Kharadi-Hadapsar-Swargate-Khadakwasla, and Line?4A connecting Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Baug. Together, these corridors will add approximately 31.636 km to the metro network, featuring 28 elevated stations that link key IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential neighborhoods across East, South, and West Pune.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) will execute all civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems work for the project. Pre-construction activities, including topographical surveys, design consultancy, and tendering processes, are already in progress. Phase 2 builds on earlier approvals for Lines 2A and 2B, reflecting the government's long-term plan to expand Pune's metro network.

Officials anticipate that once completed within the next five years, the metro network will exceed 100 km. Daily ridership on the new Lines 4 and 4A is expected to reach around 4.09?lakh commuters by 2028, rising to approximately 7?lakh by 2038. Projections suggest further growth to 9.63?lakh by 2048 and over 11.7 lakh by 2058. The Kharadi-Khadakwasla corridor alone is expected to see ridership growth from 3.23 lakh in 2028 to 9.33 lakh by 2058, while the Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Baug line is projected to increase from 85,555 passengers to 2.41 lakh during the same period.

Funding for this project will come from a combination of sources, including the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral or multilateral agencies. The expansion is expected to improve connectivity across Pune, facilitate easier commuting, and support urban development in the growing metropolitan region.
