Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has announced plans to include a new metro station on the upcoming Golden Line to improve connectivity between Terminals 1 and 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The Golden Line, part of Phase IV of the Delhi Metro expansion, will extend up to Terminal 1 and integrate with Aerocity, creating a seamless multi-modal transport network connecting metro, RRTS, and the proposed Automated People Mover (APM) system.
A senior DIAL official revealed that a new metro station would form part of the upcoming Golden Line to enhance connectivity between Delhi airport's Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Among the three terminals of the country's busiest airport, Terminals 2 and 3 are located close to each other, while Terminal 1 lies several kilometres away.
In a recent interaction, DIAL's Chief Executive Officer Videh Kumar Jaipuriar mentioned that the new integrated station is being planned to connect Aerocity with Terminal 1. He stated that the Golden Line, initially designed to terminate at Aerocity, would now be extended to reach Terminal 1 after DIAL persuaded the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to modify the route. According to him, this extension would enable passengers to travel conveniently between Terminal 1, Aerocity, and the existing Airport Express Line connecting to Terminal 3.
Currently, the Airport Metro Express Line, also known as the Orange Line, provides access to Terminal 3, while the Magenta Line links to Terminal 1. However, there is no direct metro connectivity between Terminals 1 and 3. Jaipuriar explained that the plan is to create an integrated station at Aerocity, where the Golden Line, RRTS, and an Automated People Mover (APM) station would converge. This design aims to deliver efficient multi-modal connectivity for passengers travelling between terminals.
The Golden Line, or the Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor, is under construction as part of Phase IV of the Delhi Metro expansion. Alongside the metro development, DIAL is preparing to launch an 'air train'-an elevated cum at-grade APM system-to ensure seamless movement between Terminals 1, 2, and 3. The APM project will follow a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer model, adding another layer of convenience to passenger transit.
Delhi International Airport Ltd, led by the GMR Group, operates the Indira Gandhi International Airport, which currently handles over 100 million passengers annually across its three terminals and four runways.
The extension of the Golden Line to Terminal 1 marks a key milestone in enhancing last-mile airport connectivity in Delhi. By integrating metro, RRTS, and the upcoming Automated People Mover system, DIAL and DMRC aim to create a unified, efficient, and sustainable transport hub at Aerocity. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between airport terminals and improve passenger convenience across the capital's rapidly expanding metro network.
