The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is set to submit its report on potential sites for Bengaluru's second international airport within a few days. Karnataka Infrastructure Development Minister M. B. Patil noted that the AAI team could recommend both inspected sites, but final approval will depend on financial feasibility and logistical factors. The government is proceeding with planning while adhering to the rule preventing another international airport within 150 km of Kempegowda International Airport until 2033. Tumakuru and South Bengaluru are among the proposed locations, with passenger demand and industrial needs guiding the final choice.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is expected to submit its report on potential locations for Bengaluru's second international airport within the next few days, Karnataka Infrastructure Development Minister M. B. Patil confirmed. Once the report is submitted, it will be reviewed by the state Cabinet before a final decision is made.
Minister Patil highlighted that the AAI team might recommend both sites it recently inspected. However, the financial feasibility of these locations will be evaluated by airport construction companies. He clarified that the airport would not be constructed indiscriminately on allotted land and would only proceed if the site meets necessary economic and logistical requirements.
The government is planning the project in line with regulations that prevent establishing another international airport within a 150 km radius of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) until 2033. Minister Patil noted that initiating groundwork now would help ensure the second international airport is ready by the time the restriction expires, as projects of this scale typically take at least five to six years to complete.
Currently, only New Delhi (Noida) and Mumbai (Navi Mumbai) have two international airports in India. The Karnataka government also plans to consult companies involved in other airport projects, including Tamil Nadu's proposed airport in Hosur near the Karnataka border.
On location selection, MLAs from North Karnataka suggested Tumakuru, while other representatives proposed South Bengaluru. Patil emphasized that the decision will be merit-based, considering passenger density, industrial requirements, future demand, and convenience. The government aims to balance logistical efficiency, financial viability, and accessibility when finalizing the airport site.
