The Ministry of Railways has approved a INR 757.18 crore project to construct a fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu in Tamil Nadu. The existing three-line stretch, part of the Chennai Beach-Villupuram-Tiruchirappalli-Kanyakumari corridor, operates at 87% capacity, expected to rise to 136%. The new line will improve suburban train services, support growing freight traffic of 1.344 million tonnes annually, and generate additional revenue of INR 157 crore. The project aligns with the PM-Gati Shakti 'Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor' to enhance connectivity and operational efficiency.
The Ministry of Railways has approved the construction of a fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu, estimated to cost INR 757.18 crore. The Southern Railway highlighted that the Tambaram-Chengalpattu section, currently a three-line corridor serving suburban, express, and freight trains, faces frequent congestion, affecting punctuality and operational efficiency.
With capacity utilization at 87% and projected to reach 136%, the additional line is expected to significantly ease congestion, especially for daily commuters traveling to southern districts. The development will improve suburban train operations, benefiting students, office workers, IT professionals, and residents in Tambaram, Guduvancheri, Chengalpattu, and Sriperumbudur. It will also encourage a shift from road to rail, reducing traffic pressure and supporting sustainable transport.
Freight traffic is projected to increase by 1.344 million tonnes per year, generating an estimated 157 crore INR in additional revenue. The line passes through key industrial zones, including SIPCOT parks in Oragadam, Padappai, and Kancheepuram, strengthening supply chain and logistics efficiency. The upcoming Parandur airport near Kancheepuram is also expected to boost travel demand along this corridor.
The project will be executed under Plan Head-15 (Doubling) as part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan's Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor. Once operational, the new line will support the development of Tambaram as a major coaching terminal, segregating suburban and express train services, improving operational efficiency, and reducing travel times for passengers.
