The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced its plan to deploy Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) across 23 states covering over 20,000 kilometres of National Highways. The initiative, aimed at improving commuter experience, will involve systematic data collection, processing and analysis of road inventory and pavement conditions. The survey data will be uploaded to NHAI's AI-driven portal for evaluation and maintenance planning, ensuring better highway upkeep and future asset management.
The state-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) stated earlier this week that it would deploy Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) across 23 states, covering approximately 20,933 kilometres of National Highways. The initiative aims to collect, process, and analyse data related to road inventory and pavement conditions, with the objective of enhancing the overall driving experience for commuters.
As per an official statement, the data obtained from NSV surveys will help identify deficiencies in road infrastructure, enabling NHAI to implement corrective measures for the improved maintenance of highways. The collected information will be uploaded onto NHAI's AI-enabled portal, Data Lake, where a team of experts will assess it to derive actionable insights for operational improvements.
The data, gathered regularly in line with the Government of India's guidelines, will be securely preserved within the Road Asset Management System in designated formats for technical reference. Furthermore, NHAI indicated that data collection would cover all highway projects involving two, four, six and eight lanes, with surveys being conducted before the commencement of work and subsequently every six months.
To execute this initiative, NHAI has invited bids from qualified firms to undertake the survey and data analysis process.
Through this digital initiative, NHAI intends to strengthen its highway monitoring and maintenance systems using advanced technology. The regular collection and analysis of data from NSVs will not only identify structural gaps but also enable timely maintenance interventions. By integrating AI-based analysis and structured data preservation, the authority seeks to ensure that India's expanding network of highways remains safer, smoother and better maintained for commuters nationwide.
