The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued a public notice concerning the control, care, and feeding of stray dogs across its jurisdiction. Following recent Supreme Court directions, the civic body reminded citizens that while the sterilisation and vaccination of strays are ongoing under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, residents must also comply with feeding regulations. The NMMC clarified that feeding will only be allowed at designated spots and specific times to prevent inconvenience to the public, in line with animal welfare guidelines.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) announced that under the ongoing Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs within its limits have been conducted since 2006 through the Dog Control Centre at Turbhe. A 24x7 helpline (9320056585) remains operational for citizens to register complaints related to stray dogs.
Referring to the Supreme Court's Suo Moto Writ Petition (Civil) No. 5 of 2025 and its order issued in late August 2025, the corporation stated that local self-governing bodies are responsible for protecting animals as per state guidelines. At the same time, animal lovers are expected to observe the prescribed legal responsibilities while caring for strays.
The civic body noted that it has received numerous complaints from residents regarding stray dogs chasing individuals, biting incidents, and scaring children, as well as concerns about citizens feeding dogs in public areas.
In accordance with a subsequent Supreme Court directive issued earlier this week, all local bodies must ensure that feeding of stray dogs takes place only at designated locations and fixed timings. The NMMC has therefore appealed to citizens to feed stray dogs solely at officially identified feeding spots to avoid causing discomfort to other residents. The corporation also urged the public to strictly adhere to the guidelines and regulations issued by the Supreme Court and the Animal Welfare Board of India.
Through this notice, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has sought to balance animal welfare with public convenience by enforcing structured feeding and sterilisation measures. The civic body has reiterated its commitment to implementing the Supreme Court's directives while ensuring harmony between residents and animal rights advocates. Citizens have been requested to cooperate by following designated feeding rules, reporting stray-related issues to the helpline, and ensuring that animal welfare norms are upheld responsibly across Navi Mumbai's municipal limits.
