The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advanced its proposal to expand the city's limits by incorporating 72 nearby revenue villages into its administrative boundary. The move follows the receipt of consent from these village communities and aims to improve civic governance, streamline urban services, and facilitate long-term development planning in the city's peripheral areas. The expansion will increase the BMC's existing zones from three to six and enable better delivery of essential services such as sanitation, water supply, and waste management.
The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has taken steps to bring 72 revenue villages within its jurisdiction after receiving formal consent from residents in these areas. This development is part of a broader urban expansion plan to accommodate Bhubaneswar's growing population and infrastructural demands. The villages proposed for inclusion include Dasapur, Gothapatna, Andharua, and Bhuasuni, among several others located on the city's outskirts.
Officials stated that the move is intended to enhance administrative efficiency by restructuring the civic body's operational zones. Currently divided into three zones, the BMC plans to increase the count to six, ensuring decentralised management and faster response to civic issues. A senior BMC official mentioned that the proposal has been communicated to the state housing and urban development department for formal approval. Once sanctioned, detailed surveys and mapping will be undertaken to define boundaries and prepare the financial framework for integrating these villages.
The civic body has also begun drafting cost estimates to evaluate the financial implications of providing urban services such as water supply, drainage, street lighting, and solid waste management in the new areas. Officials added that after the inclusion, residents of these villages would gain access to municipal facilities and development benefits similar to those enjoyed within the city limits.
The proposed expansion marks a strategic step by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation to strengthen urban governance and extend planned development beyond existing boundaries. It reflects the city's evolving urban profile and the state's vision to ensure equitable access to essential services for peripheral communities. Once implemented, the inclusion of these villages is expected to bring integrated growth, improved infrastructure, and enhanced living standards for residents across the expanded municipal territory.
