Synopsis

The Adani Group has announced plans to develop India's largest battery energy storage system (BESS) at Khavda, Gujarat, with a total capacity of 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh. The project, set for commissioning by March 2026, will form part of the Khavda renewable energy complex touted as the world's largest renewable energy installation. The initiative aims to improve grid stability, reduce peak load pressures, and support 24/7 clean power supply using advanced lithium-ion battery technology and integrated energy management systems.

The Adani Group has revealed its plans to enter the battery energy storage sector by developing a 1,126 MW / 3,530 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Khavda, Gujarat. The project, which will include more than 700 storage containers, is expected to be operational by March 2026 and will become India?s largest such facility. It will be integrated within the Khavda renewable energy complex, regarded as the world's largest renewable energy plant.

The project is designed to store renewable power generated from sources such as solar and wind for later use, ensuring a consistent electricity supply even during non-generating periods like nighttime or low-wind conditions. This will help improve grid stability, lower reliance on fossil fuels, and support a steady power supply at reduced costs.

According to the company, the BESS will strengthen grid reliability, ease peak load demands, and minimize transmission congestion. It will utilize advanced lithium-ion battery technology combined with energy management systems to achieve efficient and stable operation. The storage system's capacity 3,530 MWh will extend the output of 1,126 MW of power by roughly three hours.

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani noted that energy storage forms the foundation of a renewable-powered future and that the project reflects the group's commitment to India's energy independence and sustainability. He added that the initiative will help the company deliver clean, reliable, and affordable energy solutions on a large scale.

The group also outlined its long-term plans to expand its total energy storage capacity to 15 GWh by fiscal 2027 and further to 50 GWh within the next five years, emphasizing its intent to build large-scale clean energy infrastructure. The project is currently in the advanced stages of deployment at Khavda, utilizing state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries integrated with advanced energy management systems to ensure reliability and performance.

Once operational, the system will play a key role in peak load management and energy shifting, contributing to the decarbonisation of India's power sector. With this project, the Adani Group joins global energy leaders investing in large-scale storage infrastructure, marking a major step in India's transition to clean energy.

Headquartered in Ahmedabad, the Adani Group operates across energy, logistics, metals, and consumer businesses, aligning its expansion with India's net-zero and sustainability goals.
