Synopsis

JSW Energy has launched India's largest green hydrogen plant in Karnataka to supply clean hydrogen and oxygen to JSW Steel's low-carbon steel production. Developed under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme, the plant will provide 3,800 TPA of green hydrogen and 30,000 TPA of oxygen under a seven-year offtake agreement. The company also plans to supply significantly larger quantities of green hydrogen and oxygen by 2030. With 30.5 GW of locked-in generation and 29.4 GWh of storage, JSW Energy aims to expand capacity and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

JSW Energy has commissioned a green hydrogen plant in Karnataka, which will support JSW Steel in producing low-carbon steel. The company stated in a filing that this is its first green hydrogen facility and the largest in India. The project has been developed under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (Tranche I).

Located next to the JSW Steel facility in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, the plant will supply green hydrogen directly to the DRI (direct reduced iron) unit, enabling cleaner steel production. Under a seven-year offtake agreement, JSW Energy will provide 3,800 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen along with 30,000 TPA of green oxygen. This forms part of the company's 6,800 TPA allocation under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme run by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).

In addition, JSW Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with JSW Steel to progressively supply between 85,000 and 90,000 TPA of green hydrogen and 720,000 TPA of green oxygen by 2030. Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, highlighted that the project marks a significant milestone and reflects the company's commitment to India's transition toward a low-carbon economy, particularly in sectors like steel that are difficult to decarbonize.

Currently, JSW Energy has a total locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW, including 13.3 GW operational, 12.5 GW under construction across thermal and renewable sources, and 150 MW under acquisition in hydro projects, with an additional pipeline of 4.6 GW. The company also maintains 29.4 GWh of locked-in energy storage capacity, comprising 26.4 GWh from hydro pumped storage projects and 3.0 GWh from battery energy storage systems.

JSW Energy has set ambitious targets to reach 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage by FY 2030 while aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.
