Aster Chemicals and Energy and Aether Fuels have joined forces to build a renewable fuel plant on Singapore's Bukom Island, with operations expected in 2028. The 2,000 metric ton-per-year facility will produce 1,600 tons of sustainable aviation fuel and 400 tons of bionaphtha annually, converting industrial waste gas and biomethane into fuel using Aether Fuels technology. Aster will provide power, feedstock, and operational support. Singapore currently relies on Neste for renewable fuel and is introducing a 1% SAF usage mandate for departing flights from next year.
Aster Chemicals and Energy has partnered with technology company Aether Fuels to develop a renewable fuels facility on Singapore's Bukom Island. The plant is expected to begin operations in 2028. Construction on the 2,000 metric ton-per-year project, equivalent to 50 barrels per day, is scheduled to start in the second half of next year, with commercial production projected for the first half of 2028, according to Aether Fuels' CEO Conor Madigan.
The facility will produce about 1,600 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and 400 tons of bionaphtha annually once completed. The project will convert industrial waste gas and biomethane into SAF using Aether Fuels' proprietary technology. Aster will supply renewable power, waste carbon feedstock, utilities, and operational support at its Bukom refinery site. The companies did not disclose the total investment for the project.
Currently, Finnish firm Neste is Singapore's only renewable fuel producer, running a 1 million ton-per-year plant in Tuas. Singapore plans to introduce a 1% SAF mandate on all departing flights starting next year, with a tax levy on tickets and services taking effect from April 1, as noted by the civil aviation authority.
