The Indian Society of Landscape Architects (ISOLA) recently announced the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA)-Asia Pacific Regional Congress 2025, which is scheduled to take place at the Jio World Convention Centre, BKC, Mumbai, later next year. Regarded as India's largest international conference on landscape architecture, the congress will revolve around the theme "Growth Paradox: Reimagining Landscapes." The event aims to unite national and international experts in landscape design, urban planning, ecology, and policy to explore how growth can be redefined to create resilient and inclusive cities.
The initiative is being supported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as its Green Supporter, alongside Meet in India, Incredible India, the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), Centre for Environment Education (CEE), Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Centre for Development of Stones (CDOS), and CREDAI-MCHI. Leading industry exhibitors, including Freeform, Vyara, Wipro, K-Lite, SMARK, Fluidra by Astral, Simpolo, and KSR Brothers, will showcase innovations bridging design, landscape, and sustainability.
Speaking to the media, ISOLA President Urmila Rajadhyaksha mentioned that the upcoming congress would serve as a platform for India to participate in global discussions on shaping urban environments. She noted that landscape architects play a crucial role in guiding how cities evolve, balancing ecological needs with urban expansion. Through this initiative, ISOLA seeks to emphasise their contribution and inspire collaborative action for a sustainable future.
Devyani Upasani Deshmukh, Convenor of the IFLA-APR 2025, discussed the origins of the event and its thematic focus. She explained that when ISOLA secured the hosting rights in Japan in 2023, the intent was to create an inclusive event that makes landscape architecture meaningful not only to professionals but to every citizen. The theme, she stated, reflects the need to reassess modern definitions of growth and prioritise resourcefulness over novelty. The congress will include talks, debates, panel sessions, and exhibitions designed to engage a diverse audience.
Jeetendra Pardeshi, Superintendent of Gardens and Tree Officer at the BMC, highlighted Mumbai's space constraints and stressed the importance of innovation in urban greenery. He said the civic body would offer full support to ISOLA and added that landscape architects play a vital role in enhancing environmental health through vertical gardens, podium greens, and terrace landscapes.
Representing the development sector, Keval Valambhia, Chief Operating Officer of CREDAI-MCHI, remarked that true development must be intentional and humane. He pointed out that landscape architecture connects built spaces with nature and human emotion, making it fundamental to balanced urban evolution.
Mala Singh, Chairperson of IGBC, observed that landscape design gives vitality to green buildings and should be integral to the entire development process, especially as cities like Mumbai contend with the realities of climate change. Similarly, Darshana Dubhashi, Vice President of the IIA-Mumbai Chapter, noted that sustainable growth stems from collaboration and shared purpose, aligning architecture and landscape practices with innovation and ecological balance.
The IFLA-Asia Pacific Regional Congress 2025 will host over forty distinguished speakers from India and abroad. Across two days, attendees will participate in keynote sessions, panel discussions, debates, exhibitions, and a student-led Global Landscape Studio initiative. The congress will conclude with a Manifesto Declaration intended to sensitise younger generations towards sustainable development. The opening day will celebrate India's cultural heritage with a traditional puppet performance, followed by the IFLA Awards Gala Nite honouring excellence in landscape architecture across the Asia-Pacific region.
With its focus on the "Growth Paradox," the IFLA-Asia Pacific Regional Congress 2025 aims to provoke dialogue on redefining urban progress by integrating ecology, design, and human values. Supported by prominent civic and industry partners, the event will bring together thought leaders, practitioners, and institutions committed to sustainable urban transformation. As Mumbai prepares to host this landmark congress, it underscores the growing recognition of landscape architecture as central to shaping cities that are environmentally resilient, socially inclusive, and future-ready.
