Ahmedabad's Kalupur railway station is being redeveloped under the Indian Railways' Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to enhance capacity and passenger experience. The project, led by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), will add three new platforms, raising the total to 13, and include a 16-storey complex with lounges, food courts, and commercial spaces. A roof plaza, elevated road, and multi-level parking are part of the plan. The station will be seamlessly linked to the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train terminal and metro network. The Kalupur railway station in Ahmedabad is undergoing a major transformation as part of the Indian Railways? large-scale redevelopment plan. The upcoming 16-storey station complex will include passenger lounges, food courts, commercial spaces, waiting areas, and other amenities. It will also feature a roof-plaza connecting all platforms, providing seamless movement for passengers. To ease traffic flow, the plan includes an elevated road for pick-up and drop-off, and multi-level parking on both sides of the station.
A key highlight of the redevelopment is its planned integration with the Mumbai?Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. The new bullet train terminal, being developed on the Saraspur side, is already in an advanced stage of construction. Once completed, the two stations will be connected through elevated infrastructure, ensuring smooth interchange between conventional rail, metro, BRTS, and the bullet train network.
The project also focuses on preserving Ahmedabad's rich architectural heritage. The design draws inspiration from the city's historic monuments, such as the Modhera Sun Temple and the Jhulta Minar. Heritage structures like the Brick Minar and old station fa-ade will be retained and restored as part of the redevelopment. The use of local design elements is expected to give the station a distinctive identity reflecting the city's cultural legacy.
To meet future operational needs, Indian Railways is simultaneously developing a new terminal at Vatva. This terminal will feature 10 pit lines and is designed to handle nearly 150 trains daily, easing congestion at Kalupur once the redevelopment is complete. Construction work for platforms 10 and 11 has already been progressing alongside bullet train infrastructure.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who recently reviewed the progress, stated that the Kalupur redevelopment and bullet train station are advancing steadily. The work is being carried out in stages to avoid disruptions to ongoing train services, with most foundation and structural works for the bullet train platforms nearing completion.
Once finished, the upgraded Kalupur station will serve as a multi-modal transport hub, linking major modes of urban and regional transit while providing better facilities to passengers. The redevelopment is expected to handle growing traffic volumes and contribute to Ahmedabad's role as a key transport and business centre in western India.
