The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated a tender worth INR 166?crore for the upcoming Mulund Bird Park, with four companies submitting bids and construction expected to start by December this year. Spread over 17?acres near the Johnson & Johnson factory in Nahur, the park will house more than 200 bird species in four themed zones tropical, African, Australian and aquatic. Facilities will include a veterinary clinic, breeding centre, amphitheatre, kids zone, food-court and parking. After earlier delays due to limited bidders, the BMC is targeting contract finalisation by October.
Mulund in suburban Mumbai is preparing to host the city's second dedicated bird park as the BMC advances the tender process for the project. The civic body has received bids from four companies for the estimated INR 166 crore development. Officials said that once work orders are issued, construction could begin by December this year.
The park is planned on a 17 acre site near the Johnson & Johnson factory in Nahur, close to Yogi Hills. It will complement the existing Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan (Byculla Zoo) and offer a significant green space focused on bird conservation. Officials said the Mulund Bird Park will accommodate over 200 species, including exotic birds from Africa, Australia and South America. The design will feature aviaries, landscaped areas resembling natural habitats, an interpretation centre and a dedicated kids zone.
The facility will be divided into four zones based on regions: tropical, African, Australian and aquatic. Support infrastructure will include a veterinary clinic, incubation and breeding centre, amphitheatre, food-court and parking. Expected species include flamingos, parrots, macaws, cockatoos, black swans, ostriches, scarlet ibises and turacos, offering visitors a diverse and colorful birdwatching experience.
The tender for the project was first issued in August 2022, but delays occurred due to insufficient qualified bidders. The renewed tender this year received stronger interest, and officials expect the contract to be awarded by October. Earlier preparatory steps included submission of the detailed development plan to the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) and designing themed continental zones along with integrated public-recreation spaces.
Local authorities emphasized that the park will provide both an educational and recreational facility, drawing residents and tourists to suburban Mumbai. By expanding biodiversity-focused public spaces, the project is seen as an effort to strengthen the city's green infrastructure while enhancing awareness about bird conservation.
