Synopsis

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) in Ahmedabad has developed a new parallel taxiway for Code C aircraft to enhance ground handling efficiency and reduce delays. The taxiway is expected to become operational by the end of December after getting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Once active, the airports aircraft movement capacity could rise by nearly 20 %, helping reduce fuel use and turnaround time. The project follows earlier upgrades, including a 395-metre taxiway extension commissioned in May 2024.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPI) in Ahmedabad has completed work on a new parallel taxiway for Code C aircraft to improve ground operations and reduce congestion. Airport officials confirmed that the facility will become operational by the end of December, once the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) gives its final approval.

This new taxiway is designed to enable aircraft to reach the runway more directly, reducing long taxi routes and waiting times. It will help minimise fuel consumption, speed up aircraft turnaround, and ensure smoother traffic flow during busy hours.

Currently, Ahmedabad airport manages about 18?20 aircraft movements every hour. After the new taxiway becomes operational, airport authorities expect this number to increase by around 20 %, which will help manage growing passenger traffic efficiently. The project is part of a larger plan to enhance airside infrastructure in line with future traffic growth.

The airport had earlier carried out a 395-metre extension of an existing taxiway in May 2024, which helped improve aircraft movement and reduce waiting time on runways. That extension laid the groundwork for this new parallel taxiway, which forms the next step in expanding capacity.

According to officials, the project is a key component of SVPI?s broader development strategy, which includes upgrading runways, taxiways, and terminal facilities to meet long-term capacity targets. The airport?s master plan had previously identified limited taxiway infrastructure as one of the main constraints to handling higher air traffic between 2026 and 2030.

The parallel taxiway will serve as a major operational asset once it receives DGCA clearance, supporting the airport?s ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and passenger service reliability.
