JA Solar announced it had signed a module-supply agreement with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the EPC contractor for the Samarkand 1 and 2 utility-scale solar PV plants in Uzbekistan. The two projects, developed by ACWA Power, will together have a capacity of 1.2 GW and are projected to power hundreds of thousands of homes while offsetting over one million tons of CO? annually. The deal underlines JA Solar's commitment to Central Asia's energy transition and supports Uzbekistan's aim to derive 25 % of its power from renewables by 2030.
The Chinese PV manufacturer JA Solar has entered into a contract with India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) under which JA Solar will supply all photovoltaic modules for the Samarkand 1 & 2 solar power plants in central Uzbekistan. The two plants, being developed near Samarkand city by ACWA Power, will have an aggregate capacity of 1.2 GW. Under the agreement, JA Solar assumes the role of the exclusive module-supplier for this pair of utility-scale projects.
These solar plants are expected to generate sufficient electricity to serve hundreds of thousands of households and to reduce carbon emissions by more than one million tonnes annually. They also tie into Uzbekistan's energy policy target of drawing 25 % of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
The three parties ACWA Power, L&T and JA Solar-present themselves as committed to delivering bankable, high-performance solar assets in emerging markets. Beyond clean energy generation, the projects are designed to foster local employment, infrastructure development and contribute to grid stability.
Mr Aiqing Yang, Executive President of JA Solar, commented that the company was honoured to support these strategic projects alongside world-class partners, and noted that its high-efficiency, high-reliability modules are engineered to maximise energy yield in diverse environments. He added that the agreement underscores the confidence their partners place in JA Solar's technology and execution capabilities.
JA Solar also stated that it will continue working with international developers and EPC firms to deliver reliable PV solutions meeting the performance, durability and delivery standards required for large-scale deployment. The company emphasised its commitment to enabling sustainable growth across Central Asia and other high-potential markets.
For context, Uzbekistan, while rich in natural gas and historically reliant on fossil fuels for power generation, has been pushing to diversify its energy mix and increase solar deployment. Earlier initiatives included tenders for up to 1.4 GW of solar projects in the country.
