TotalEnergies has entered a 10-year agreement with Data4 to supply renewable electricity to its data centres in Spain, starting in 2026. The contract will provide 610 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean energy from Spanish wind and solar farms. This aligns with Data4's goal to meet the growing energy demands of the data centre sector, particularly with the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI). TotalEnergies, in turn, continues its strategic shift towards more predictable and stable income from renewable sources.
TotalEnergies, the French energy giant, has signed a 10-year contract with Data4, a prominent European data centre operator, to supply renewable electricity to its data centre sites in Spain. The agreement, set to begin in January 2026, will deliver 610 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable energy sourced from newly developed wind and solar farms in Spain. This energy will help power Data4's operations as the company works to meet growing demand for data processing and storage.
Data4's Chief Financial Officer, Francois Sterin, highlighted that this contract is part of the company's broader commitment to renewable energy. The increasing energy needs of data centres, particularly in light of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), are expected to drive a threefold increase in energy consumption by 2030 across Spain's data centres. Sterin emphasized that securing a long-term, sustainable energy supply is crucial for Data4 to support this anticipated demand.
For TotalEnergies, this deal is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its position in the renewable energy market. The company is focusing more on electricity, aiming to provide a stable income that is less susceptible to the price fluctuations typically seen in the oil and gas industry. TotalEnergies' CEO, Patrick Pouyanne, discussed this shift in strategy during the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC), explaining that investments in renewable energy are key to building more predictable revenue streams for the company moving forward.
