Synopsis

Nagaland has achieved a 96% completion rate under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojan-Urban (PMAY-U), with nearly 30,000 houses built, marking one of the strongest performances among north-eastern states. Officials highlighted that since 2016, beneficiaries have received INR 1.5 lakh per household in phased assistance, improving urban housing access while generating employment and infrastructure growth. At the PM Awas Mela-Shehri in Chumoukedima, officials launched the "Angikaar 2025" campaign, laying the groundwork for PMAY-U 2.0, which raises financial aid to INR 2.5 lakh per unit with a 90:10 funding ratio. The renewed five-year phase aims to provide affordable, permanent homes for Nagaland's urban poor and middle-income families.

Nagaland's State Mission Directorate recently announced that the state had constructed nearly 30,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) scheme, recording a completion rate of approximately 96 per cent. The progress was described as a major achievement, particularly given the state's challenging terrain and limited urban infrastructure. Officials mentioned that Nagaland continues to be among the leading north-eastern states in implementing the centrally sponsored housing programme.

The mission director stated that since the introduction of PMAY-U in 2016, thousands of beneficiaries have received financial assistance in three instalments, amounting to INR 1.5 lakh per household in the first phase. She further noted that the initiative has not only improved housing access for the urban poor but has also contributed to employment generation and infrastructure development in several towns.

Speaking at the second PM Awas Mela-Shehri organised under the "Angikaar 2025" campaign at the Chumoukedima Town Council hall, the director outlined that the Angikaar initiative would serve as the foundation for implementing PMAY-U 2.0. The programme would continue promoting inclusivity through awareness drives, beneficiary camps and loan melas designed to reach marginalised communities.

The adviser to the Department of Municipal Affairs and Urban Development elaborated that under the renewed phase, financial support has been increased to INR 2.5 lakh per household. The disbursement pattern remains the same released in three stages based on construction progress. Funding continues to be supported in a 90:10 ratio, with the central government covering the larger share.

Officials clarified that PMAY-U 2.0 will span five years, targeting both the urban poor and middle-income families. The focus remains on constructing, upgrading and acquiring affordable homes to ensure every eligible household in Nagaland's urban areas secures a pucca dwelling.
