Assam Chief Minister Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and pressed for expansion of the state's rail infrastructure. He requested that three new Amrit Bharat trains be introduced into Assam, advocated a new rail link between Umrangso (Dima Hasao district) and Lanka (Hojai district), and urged the early completion of the Kokrajhar-Gelephu line connecting India with Bhutan. He also asked for additional stoppages of major trains passing through Assam to benefit local passengers. The railway minister has reportedly given consent to take action on these items.
The Chief Minister of Assam, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently held a 25-minute meeting with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to seek accelerated expansion of the railway network in the state. During the meeting, Sarma proposed the introduction of three new Amrit Bharat trains to and from Assam which he said would support both passenger convenience and regional connectivity.
In addition, Sarma put forward a plan for a new rail link between the town of Umrangso in the Dima Hasao district and Lanka in the Hojai district. He emphasised that this connection would improve access to the hilly hinterlands of Assam and foster greater movement across central and southern parts of the state.
Another key demand from the state government was the expedited completion of the proposed rail line from Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan. Sarma indicated that this Indo-Bhutan link would strengthen cross-border connectivity and strategic regional integration.
Sarma also appealed for more stoppages at major train stations in Assam for the trains passing through the state, in order to make rail travel more accessible for residents.
According to the official statement, the railway minister "kindly consented" to the proposals and gave assurances that the ministry will proceed with implementing the discussed measures.
These moves build on earlier announcements: the Kokrajhar-Gelephu rail link, for instance, has been budgeted at around INR 4,033 crore and has been designated as a Special Railway Project in recent months to fast-track land acquisition and construction.
