Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced a plan to build a 21-kilometre double-deck flyover connecting Shil Phata junction with Ranjnoli junction near Bhiwandi. The structure will include a four-lane road on the lower level and dedicated space for three metro lines on the upper deck. The corridor will connect with major projects like the Airoli-Katai Freeway, the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor, and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train alignment. The project aims to ease congestion and improve connectivity between Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Dombivli, and Bhiwandi.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is preparing to develop a 21-kilometre flyover connecting Shil Phata in Navi Mumbai to Ranjnoli junction near Bhiwandi. Once completed, it will be one of the longest flyovers in the country. The structure is designed as a double-deck corridor, with a four-lane road for vehicles on the lower deck and provisions for metro lines on the upper deck. Officials said the project will significantly reduce travel time and decongest the existing routes between Navi Mumbai, Dombivli, Kalyan, and Bhiwandi.

According to MMRDA officials, the proposed route will start at Shil Phata on National Highway 48, pass through Dombivli and Kalyan, and end at Ranjnoli junction on National Highway 160, which connects Mumbai to Nashik. The flyover will intersect key infrastructure projects, including the Airoli-Katai Freeway and the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor. It will also take into account the alignment of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project to ensure seamless integration of different transport networks.

The upper deck of the flyover will accommodate three metro lines. These include Metro 5 between Bhiwandi and Kalyan from Durgadi Fort to Ranjnoli junction, Metro 12 between Kalyan and Taloja from Kalyan APMC to Runwal junction, and Metro 14 between Kanjurmarg and Badlapur from Shil Phata to Katai Naka. MMRDA plans to align the metro piers with the road structure to optimize space and reduce construction delays.

An official from MMRDA stated that the agency is in the process of appointing a consultant who will prepare the detailed project report (DPR) and oversee the tendering and execution process. Once the DPR is finalized, the authority will invite bids for construction. Officials added that the project?s design phase will focus on structural stability and smooth traffic integration with existing roads.

The MMRDA has been developing several integrated transport corridors across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in recent years. The Airoli-Katai Freeway, the Thane-Borivali Tunnel, and ongoing metro expansions are part of its broader effort to enhance connectivity and manage growing traffic volumes. The upcoming flyover project follows this approach by combining road and metro infrastructure within a single structure, offering long-term efficiency and better land utilization.
