A 56-metre steel span was recently installed at the Sonapur junction in Mulund as part of the ongoing Metro-4 construction between Wadala and Kasarvadavali. The heavy-duty operation, carried out in two phases using 500-tonne cranes and multi-axle trailers, required complete traffic closure at the GMLR junction over two nights. Commuters were diverted through alternative routes including Village Road, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Road, and Subhash Nagar Road. Authorities confirmed that additional work will continue next weekend and that one lane on LBS Road will remain closed till the end of December.
The construction of Mumbai Metro-4 reached an important stage with the placement of a 56-metre steel span at the Sonapur junction in Mulund. The span, forming part of the elevated corridor, was installed as a key link in the line that connects Wadala to Kasarvadavali. The operation was executed in two phases with precision, supported by 500-tonne cranes, multi-axle trailers, and other heavy-lifting equipment to ensure the correct positioning of the span.
To facilitate this installation, the GMLR junction at Bhandup-Sonapur was completely closed to traffic from 10 pm on Saturday to 10 am on Sunday, and again from 10 pm on Sunday to 7 am on Monday. Emergency vehicles, however, were permitted to pass through the stretch. The traffic police managed diversions through nearby routes such as Village Road in Bhandup, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Mulund West, and Subhash Nagar Road. Despite the arrangements, the closure led to traffic congestion in surrounding areas, as the junction usually experiences high vehicular movement even during weekends.
Officials stated that since the steel span work is not yet fully completed, the next round of construction will take place the following weekend. During this period, the same stretch is expected to experience partial closure. According to the traffic police, one lane at the Bhandup-Sonapur junction on LBS Road will remain closed as required from November 10 until December 31 to accommodate the remaining structural work and finishing activities.
The 32.32-kilometre Metro-4 line will include 30 stations, linking key suburban areas and improving travel between Thane and central Mumbai. It will also provide interchange connectivity with Metro Lines 2B, 5, and 6, as well as the Central Railway and the Eastern Express Highway. The project, being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is aimed at decongesting road traffic and reducing travel time between the city and suburbs.
The recent closure highlights the challenges faced during large-scale urban infrastructure work in areas with dense population and constant vehicular flow. Traffic authorities said they are coordinating with MMRDA engineers to minimise inconvenience and ensure the construction progresses within the planned schedule.
