Synopsis

Four regional airports in Uttar Pradesh will halt scheduled commercial services during the upcoming winter flight timetable, government sources say. The affected airports are facing long-standing challenges such as low passenger numbers and a shortage of suitable aircraft. This move marks a sharper cut in connectivity than in previous years. Though the suspension is tied to the winter schedule, it raises questions about the viability of sustained commercial operations at these locations.

Commercial operations at four airports in Uttar Pradesh will be suspended during the forthcoming winter schedule, according to official sources. The decision results from persistent issues: airline operators cite weak passenger demand and a shortage of aircraft that are economically viable for these routes.

In recent seasons these airports had continued with reduced services under regional connectivity initiatives, but the scale of operation has been shrinking. The new adjustment comes as airlines prioritise deployment of planes towards larger, more profitable hubs with higher throughput.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and relevant state aviation authorities are expected to finalise and publish the detailed schedule changes in due course. Local stakeholders including travellers and businesses tied to air-connectivity have already voiced concern about worsening access and the possible economic fallout.

Although the suspension is officially framed as temporary for the winter schedule, the underlying structural issues of low utilisation and constrained aircraft deployment highlight longer-term concerns about maintaining commercial services at smaller airports.
