Synopsis

The Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court has asked the contractor handling the repair of the National Highway 306/06 Sairang-Kawnpui stretch in Mizoram to submit an affidavit on current progress and completion schedule, following a public interest petition by the Mizoram Truck Driver Association raising concerns over the road's dilapidated state. The court set a deadline for the report and warned that officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) may need to appear in person if the contractor fails to respond. The highway is considered vital for Mizoram's supplies and transport.

The Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court has directed the contractor responsible for repairing the Sairang-Kawnpui stretch of National Highway 306/06 to file a detailed document outlining progress and a completion schedule. The directive came amid a public interest litigation filed by the Mizoram Truck Driver Association over what it described as the persistent dilapidated condition of the highway.

The stretch falls under the jurisdiction of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and is being handled by the contractor MSJ Infratech. The court asked for the affidavit by the end of the month, warning that, if it is not received, NHIDCL officials will have to personally appear at the next hearing.

The petition noted that the highway, which serves as a lifeline for the state of Mizoram, has been in a state of worsening condition, particularly during the monsoon season, and transporters along with common commuters have long voiced concern.

Ahead of this, truckers in Mizoram had launched protests and blocked the Sairang-Kawnpui stretch (and the Kolasib-Bairabi section of NH-06) over the lack of meaningful repair action, which had caused supplies to be delayed and vehicles to be stranded.

Previous reports had pointed out that this section of NH-306 is critical because many of Mizoram's supplies come through it from Assam, making its poor condition a bottleneck for the state's logistics and everyday transit.
