Synopsis

The Municipal Corporation of Prayagraj (MCP) has announced that it will develop seven major parks as "Model Parks" under the Smart Cities Mission, with a budget of INR 5 crore. In the first phase, four parks each over one acre will be selected after a city-wide survey. Candidate sites include Naini, Shankusi, Phaphamau, Kalindipuram, Rajrooppur, Kydganj, and Tikonia Park near the Parade Ground. These parks are to feature walking tracks, open-air gyms, child-friendly play areas, seating for older adults, shade and ornamental plants, LED boards for traffic and cyber-safety awareness, and eco-friendly design. MCP also plans to revamp parks in housing-project areas under the Prayagraj Development Authority, including a 32-bigha park in Rajrooppur which has already been surveyed.

The Municipal Corporation of Prayagraj has unveiled plans to transform seven prominent green spaces in the city into "Model Parks" as part of its Smart Cities initiative. With an estimated budget of INR 5 crore, the project aims to enhance community recreation and environmental sustainability. Each selected park will be larger than one acre, and the first phase will involve the development of four such parks.

To identify appropriate sites, the corporation will conduct a comprehensive survey across all wards. Sites currently under consideration include those located in Naini, Shankusi, Phaphamau, Kalindipuram, Rajrooppur, and Kydganj. In addition, Tikonia Park (near the Parade Ground) is being looked at due to its strategic location and popularity among residents.

Each Model Park will combine modern infrastructure with an eco-friendly layout. Features will include synthetic walking tracks and open-air gym equipment for users in the morning and evening hours. For families, there will be comfortable seating areas for senior citizens and adults, while children will have swings, slides, and dedicated play zones. Greenery will be enhanced with shade-giving and ornamental plants to improve air quality and create a relaxing environment.

In a further educational component, each park will be equipped with LED display boards that aim to raise awareness among children about traffic rules through interactive games, and among youth about cyber-safety.

The redevelopment initiative also extends to parks located within housing projects managed by the Prayagraj Development Authority. For example, a 32-bigha park in Rajrooppur has already been surveyed and is expected to be developed under this scheme.

The Smart Cities Mission has already guided earlier efforts in the city to upgrade open spaces and public infrastructure. A recent study had observed that Prayagraj was lagging behind in public open spaces in terms of per-capita availability and area coverage, underscoring the need for such interventions.

Mayor Ganesh Keservani mentioned that developing these parks would not only beautify the city but also provide better spaces for residents to relax, exercise, and socialise.
